Orpheus is a figure from ancient Greek mythology. He was said to be the greatest human player of the lyre, and to be able to charm anything by his music (even rocks). He was also gay, or bisexual, though that was not considered distinctive in ancient times. He is probably best known, today, for his descent into the underworld, to try to retrieve his wife, after she died from snake bites. However, like other mythical heroes, he is almost certainly an allegorical figure.
