Todos sabemos que el ser hombre o mujer responde a unas raíces biológicas y psicológicas con las cuales nacemos, pero, ¿qué ocurre con la masculinidad y la feminidad?
¿Son las características femeninas como la sensibilidad o la intuición propias únicamente de las mujeres?
* Are feminine characteristics such as sensitivity or intuition unique to women?
¿Pueden los hombres mostrar su tristeza o su miedo sin perder su identidad masculina?
*Can men show their sadness or fear without losing their masculine identity?
El género lo constituyen una serie de características psicológicas, emocionales y mentales que por convencionalismo se han considerado masculinas o femeninas.
*Gender is a series of psychological, emotional and mental characteristics that by convention have been considered masculine or feminine.
La sensibilidad, la competitividad, la asertividad, la visión estética, etc. son todas características psicológicas que cualquier ser humano puede tener.
*Sensitivity, competitiveness, assertiveness, aesthetic vision, etc. are all psychological characteristics that any human being can have.
El que una característica sea considerada como masculina o femenina es algo artificial que se nos impone a cada uno de nosotros desde el momento en que nacemos:
*Whether a characteristic is considered masculine or feminine is something artificial that is imposed on each of us from the moment we are born:
si eres niño, tendrás que ser fuerte y competitivo; si naces niña, la sensibilidad y obediencia serán muy valoradas en ti.
*If you are a child, you will have to be strong and competitive; If you are born a girl, sensitivity and obedience will be highly valued in you.
Las personas (tanto hombres como mujeres) nacemos con una gama muy amplia de potencialidades, tanto masculinas como femeninas, pero mediante el proceso de socialización hiperdesarrollamos unas y atrofiamos otras para acomodarnos al papel preestablecido que nos ha tocado vivir:
*People (both men and women) are born with a very wide range of potentialities, both male and female, but through the process of socialization we hyper develop some and atrophy others to accommodate the pre-established role that we have had to live:
Reprimimos aquéllas características que no se ajustan al esquema de género y desarrollamos conscientemente las que sí lo hacen.
*We repress those characteristics that do not conform to the gender schema and consciously develop those that do.
Un ejemplo claro lo tenemos en la sensibilidad de los hombres, tan reprimida durante años, que llevó a la sociedad en su conjunto a decir: “los hombres no lloran”, y lo que es peor, a creérselo.
*A clear example is the sensitivity of men, so repressed for years, which led society as a whole to say: “men do not cry”, and what is worse, to believe it.
De modo que a un niño se le hacía modular su comportamiento desde pequeño reprimiendo su tristeza, su vulnerabilidad o su debilidad para adoptar una imagen de fortaleza y frialdad que no siempre se corresponde con la realidad.
*So a child was made to modulate his behavior from an early age by repressing his sadness, his vulnerability or his weakness to adopt an image of strength and coldness that does not always correspond to reality.
Al mismo tiempo, las mujeres tenían que fingir ser débiles y medio tontas para evitar el rechazo social.
*At the same time, women had to pretend to be weak and half-dumb to avoid social rejection.
Por ejemplo, una característica femenina es la debilidad, mientras que la característica masculina es la fortaleza. Independientemente de la fortaleza que pueda tener una mujer, si quiere ser absolutamente femenina tendrá que aparentar debilidad, incluso aunque sea fuerte.
*For example, a female characteristic is weakness, while the male characteristic is strength. Regardless of the strength that a woman may have, if she wants to be absolutely feminine she will have to appear weak, even if she is strong.
Ello la llevará a tener una lucha interna entre lo que siente dentro de sí (fortaleza) y lo que debe aparentar (debilidad).
*This will lead her to have an internal struggle between what she feels inside herself (strength) and what she should appear (weakness).
Paralelamente, un hombre debe aparentar fortaleza, aunque en ocasiones se sienta desfallecer.
*At the same time, a man must appear strong, even if he sometimes feels faint.
Ello le lleva a sobrecargarse por el esfuerzo, a competir obligatoriamente para aparentar ser muy macho, a fingir que no se siente herido, a disimular que está emocionado.
*This leads him to overload himself from the effort, to compete obligatorily to appear very macho, to pretend that he does not feel hurt, to disguise that he is excited.
Esta imposición en el desarrollo de nuestras potencialidades nos conduce a la construcción de un ser artificial al que no se le ha permitido desarrollarse plena y libremente como ser humano completo y cuya forma de vivir y relacionarse no es sincera ni permite la libre expresión del individuo.
*This imposition on the development of our potentialities leads us to the construction of an artificial being that has not been allowed to develop fully and freely as a complete human being and whose way of living and relating is not sincere nor does it allow the free expression of the individual.
Pero, ¿es posible combinar las características masculinas y femeninas sin perder la propia identidad?
**But is it possible to combine male and female characteristics without losing one’s identity?
Los taoístas encontraron la respuesta hace miles de años: Para ellos, el Tao es la unidad, en la cual se desenvuelven el Yin y el Yang, que se combinan de múltiples maneras para crear la multiplicidad de formas existentes.
*The Taoists found the answer thousands of years ago: For them, the Tao is the unity, in which Yin and Yang unfold, which combine in multiple ways to create the multiplicity of existing forms.
El Yin es lo receptivo, femenino, intuitivo, la noche, lo oscuro, lo inmóvil, la sustancia…
*Yin is the receptive, feminine, intuitive, the night, the dark, the motionless, the substance…
El Yang es lo creativo, masculino, activo, el día, lo luminoso, en movimiento, la energía…
*Yang is the creative, masculine, active, the day, the luminous, moving, the energy…
Ambas características se combinan de múltiples formas en cada una de las cosas y los seres del Universo.
**Both characteristics are combined in multiple ways in each of the things and beings of the Universe.
Todos tenemos características de ambos polos: Yin y Yang. La combinación especial de estos atributos es lo que nos convierte en seres únicos.
**We all have characteristics of both poles: Yin and Yang. The special combination of these attributes is what makes us unique.
